BTT: Going Public

September 22, 2011

Do you carry books with you when you’re out and about in the world?

And, do you ever try to hide the covers?

Oh, goodness, do I, indeed! I have been made fun of since I was a little kid, for carrying way too many books at a time. Right now, as we “speak”, I have my nightstand at the hospital piled high, proudly, with my reading list. It really is a conversation starter, I find. I have no less than three books in my bag at any given time for who knows what end. I also love displaying covers as I, again, think it a good conversation starter. I’ve never read anything I deem inappropriate for public consumption so I tend not to shy away from displaying covers. In fact, as I mentioned, I tend to show them off. It’s one of the drawbacks to the e-book, I thnk, this bit about my want of everyone knowing what book I’m reading. Is this self centered or just hopelessly extroverted? Not sure. Don’t care. Can’t change it.

That’s one thing about ebooks that I don’t like, not having a proper cover. I don’t show my covers off when reading, but I do like to look back at it every now and again while I make my way through the story.

It’s a type of art appreciation – cover appreciation.

Well, when I was reading the Twilight series, I didn’t want anyone to know! And whenever I reread Harry Potter, I worry that people will think I’m reading it for the first tiime! Don’t know why I care. Mostly I worry about people reading over my shoulder when I’m at a sex scene or violent passage.

How do you possibly carry around 3 books at a time?!?! You are going to kill your back! Is it because you drive everywhere? I carry way too much stuff to work every day, and it’s bad because I take the subway, so it really hurts my back and shoulder. I hate when I have a really thick hardcover. That’s the only reason I would switch to an ereader.

I love people who want to start conversations about my books! Those are good people 🙂

I gotta take a book everywhere!

I also carry around books everywhere I go, covers out! I always feel so nosy, but when someone is reading something in public, I will contort myself in all kinds of positions to see what they are reading. Funny thing: I went to SIBA this past week without a book, which is sort of crazy for me, because I carry one everywhere. I had nothing to read that first night, and my husband thought that was hilarious. I did not.

Lol! Funny last sentence particularly. I think it’s practically a civic service you’re offering there, an easy way to strike up a conversation for those keen to have a book chat. What a great, noble act on your part! Catching up here, glad to know you are safe and sound and cooking well. Oh and I am a huge David Sedaris fan.

I bet those books are lifesavers for you in the hospital! I don’t ever hide covers either.

I’ll always carry around a book but I don’t know if I care about who sees the cover or not. I’ve never really thought about it. Hmmm, now I’ll have to.

I don’t remember ever being embarrassed about a cover, but sometimes at the library or in a book store I feel a little funny because I’m often the one wandering around with a giant stack of books in my hands while still looking for more books to add to the pile. Books are such great company – I always feel more comfortable when I’m surrounded by books.

I always have a book with me, and will admit to peeking to see what others are reading. We miss this when people are out in public reading on their e-devices 😦

Glad you’ve got plenty of reading material on the hospital nightstand.

I always have a book with me at all times as well! I hate carrying big purses, but I ended up buying one big enough to hold all my junk, and at least 2 books. lol! 🙂

I never go anywhere without a book. I’ve been caught too many times without one when I’ve had to wait some ridiculous time on a line or in a doctor’s waiting office or on public transportation that has stalled.
I don’t remember ever hiding a cover, and I am a total snoop when it comes to checking out what other people are reading.

I’m glad you have lots of books to keep your mind occupied.

By the way, I sent you an e-mail that may have gotten caught in your spam filter. Would you mind checking when you have a moment? Thanks,
