Queen Bee ~ Dorothea Benton Frank

May 31, 2019

Hardcover: 432 pages
Publisher: William Morrow (May 28, 2019)

Oh, sweet southern reads are the best when summer hits Atlanta.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read something as purely fun as a Dorothy Benton Frank Book so this was a delightful departure from my usual doom and gloom, fantasy apocalypse stuff.

The story begins with Holly McNee Kenson, a (Young) 30 something bee keeper, living at home with her aging and ailing mother. She never was the favorite of the family, much to everyone’s knowledge.

She starts with a massive chip on her shoulder (that was quite irritating for a while, even though as a therapist, I got where it came from) and she kind of takes out her simmering bitterness on her mother ;who isn’t a peach, herself) and her sister (also not a peach) and on herself.

The self destruction was a little hard to watch, but again, kind of setting up the hurdles to knock down throughout the book, so I sat tight.

And I’m glad I did.

When Holly’s already rocky little world is shaken up even more by her “perfect” sister’s return to town, Holly is forced to examine the mired emotions she’s dead set on sinking into. When all hell breaks loose, things have to change or sink. I’d let you in on more but you really should read it and find out for yourself.

There were a few problematic things for me (I know her mother was awful but the fat shaming and diet culture really got under my skin) but overall, this was a sweet and wonderful start of the summer read.

Thank you to TLC for adding me on the tour!
