Ok, I absolutely ADORED this book.
It’s the debut novel from the Moulite sisters, Maika and Maritza and it completely stole my heart from the first page.
There have had so many stories told about Haiti about the horrendous hardships the country has suffered. While those stories are so important, it is still a living, breathing place with heart and soul, filled with other voices that speak of love and loyalty and longing.
Told from the view point of Miami high school student Alaine, this specific story follows her existence as an annoyed, eye rolling teen, trying to get out of the shadow of her reporter mother. She finally gets her chance to break free when she makes moves to live with her Titi for two months. Of course, her eagle eyed mama is along for the ride but island life gives them both a bit of breathing room and, of course, growing room.
Alaine’s voice is super self aware and as searching as it is bold. Her exploration of her own self, as she explores her new accommodations was a welcome breath of fresh air among my many other heavier reads.
The book comes out in September and I highly recommend it.
