So, my high school did Camelot the year before my freshman year. It was also a beloved movie in my house, growing up.

King Arthur and Queen Guinevere and swords and stones have always been in my rear view mirror.

I sort of stalled on picking up Once & Future because I wasn’t sure how my old stories would translate to a post-earth space adventure but I’m really glad I ended up giving it a shot.

In the retelling, Ari is a teenage girl, fleeing Mercer (the conglomerate, corporate monstrosity that basically owns the known universe). She’s on the run with her adopted brother and his friends, sidestepping Mercer at all cost.

Eventually, she stumbles upon The Thing, being Excalibur, setting off the age old story and subsequently bringing Merlin back from a deep sleep. Adventure ensues.

It was a super fun story and I loved the Queer twists and turns added to the classic tale. I had a little bit of trouble keeping up because I kept trying to compare it to the old story. Once I realized what I was doing and just put Camelot aside, I enjoyed it a great deal more.

It’s a super fun and fast paced start of summer read, though, again, make sure you’re not expected a blow by blow parallel to the original.
