The Wonder of Lost Causes ~ Nick Trout
Every human talks to their dog.
Every human thinks their dog “talks” to them.
By what do you do when your eleven year old insists that he has an actual magical connection with a dog that you, as a veterinarian, need to make a life or death decision about?
That’s Doctor Kate’s dilemma as she fights for her son’s life and incredibly the stray dog her son has affixed himself to.
She is the sole caretaker of a preteen son with cystic fibrosis, a vet at a Cape Cod shelter that is on the brink of being shut down, and really not in the mood (or financial place) to take on a dog with his own medical issues.
But as both a dog lover and a doting mom, her son’s obsession with this mutt begins to take a toll on her heart strings, making for one very emotional ride.
As the single mom of an eleven year old, a caring field professional, and life long dog obsessed human, this book had me from the get go.
It also takes place in Massachusetts, which is where I grew up so that made the whole thing more fun.
It also came at a kind of teary moment, too. Though the the book has a lot of fun and silliness going on (as dogs and kiddos do), the part dealing with cystic fibrosis came during a week when one of my dear friends lost a young adult friend to the illness. When I picked up the book to read through it, it felt that much heavier having just heard the real life reality of the fiction I was immersed in.
For that (and the shelter dog love and awareness) I am super grateful for this beautiful book.
Thank you so much to TLC Book Tours and Nick Trout for giving me the chance to be on this tour. And definitely go pick up a copy when it comes out!
