Oh, Julie.
I adored Iron Fey but I can’t say the same thing about Shadow of the Fox. I struggled through the first three hundred pages and was only slightly happier with the last quarter.
I think she may have tried to do too much with one story. It’s rich and complex and I loved many aspects of the book but I found myself lost as to which view point was occurring, which timeline we were in, and just in general, what was happening.
I hate when that happens with a book that I’ve anticipated loving. And there really was so much potential in this story. The characters just never got off the ground for me. The history and legends seemed to almost be an after thought which was not only disappointing but pretty confusing.
As with all books that fall flat, for me, it’s likely that I read this at the wrong time. Perhaps I needed something lighter or something a little less complex. I’d be willing to give it another shot down the line but for right now, I can’t say I loved it.
Too bad. Books are such a delicate balance of character, pace, plot, and world building. It is possible to try to do too much and create something too complex. Sorry to hear you were disappointed. đŸ˜¦
