Well, folks, I might be done with the series after only two books.
I absolutely hate giving mediocre reviews, never mind negative ones, however, this one was just really not my speed.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and had high hopes for the series. The story, however, just did not pan out promisingly enough for me to continue with the saga.
I’m not entirely sure where to begin with my critique but I can try.
The whole of the second book felt like a recap and bludgeoning to death of the points made in the first.
We are given a world divided into so many splintered factions that it is difficult to keep up the flow of the narrative. At first, this kaleidoscope style of storytelling appealed to me because, like so many fabulous books before it (A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass, The Mortal Instruments, etc.), I thought the varied point of view concept would weave together into a world thick with magic and drama, something h I could get lost in and thoroughly enjoy.
Unfortunately, the story is so staggered and disjointed that I had a hard time reimagining interested.
I also don’t mind a bit of bloodshed but it seemed as though people who sneezed ever so slightly to one side or another caught a sword to the throat for barely a given reason.
The adult leaders (and often the young adult protagonists) were so intensely unlikable that I felt myself dreading opening the book. It simply didn’t give me a reason to resume reading.
I did make it to the end but I fear I will not be finishing the series as it really just failed to resonate with me on even a superficial level.
