I’ve been alternating between high fantasy and contemporary, recently, and when I am with one, I tend to miss the other.

Thankfully, Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince manages to serve both purposes so it quickly became exactly what I was looking for.

There are so many twists and turns that I feel like a normal summary is going to give away far too much. At its core, the catalyst is pretty simple, though. Seven-year-old Jude, her twin sister, and their older sister, end up whisked away from their normal, modern-day existence, to live among faeries. It’s a little bit like Alice in Wonderland mixed with The Labyrinth and a few other things.

The book is beautiful and funny at times but it also recalls classic fairy tales in the dark, sinister, and often violent telling of the unfolding plot. Yes, there is magic and glitter and beauty, but there is also a strong undercurrent of old blood, blending fairy tales and every sensational rehashing of royal feuds you’ve ever read about.

The story is a fast read and I’m sort of disappointed I read it so early because it’s the first in a series and, sigh, now I have to wait for the next book. That aside, I really think this is the start of something beautiful so go ahead and pick it up. then we can all wait in misery, together, for the next volume.

Waiting for the next book IS THE WORST!
