[TSS] Books Past and Present
This week was full of deep, dark, heavy stories. Ok, maybe not full as there were only two to tell of but deep and heavy they were.
Pat Conroy’s South of Broad was the third, but certainly not the last installment of my Southern Reading Challenge and by far my favorite of the three. The book comes out in August and is a must read.
Lev Grossman’s The Magicians was a present from my dear friend Toni. It was an interesting look at how we define and seek happiness in various stages of our life. The book is not I the states for another two weeks but has been on shelves across the pond for a few months, now.
I also spotlighted one of my favorite kids’ books, Puff the Magic Dragon.
I am about 50 pages into The Help and am loving every minute of it. Kathryn Stockett lives a few miles from us so this read is way over due.
In the bullpen, right now, are Shadow of the Wind and Until I Find You. I would really like to get through Until I Find You so I am all caught up on my Irving this fall when Last Night In Twisted River comes out. I am also waiting on my Librarythings and GoodReads books, from this month, Glover’s Mistake and The Fixer Upper, respectively.
What did you read this week? What are you looking forward to reading this fall? New books? Old books? Tell me everything.
I’ve never read anything by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I really need to.
I’m working on Magic Bus on the Hippie Trail, but I am spending most of my on the computer. Eek!
I’ve got The Help and The Magicians on hold at the library but there are many ahead of me so it will be a while. Have a great week.
I have a copy of The Magicians and am really looking forward to reading it at some point, I have the help on audio. I’ve heard that it’s pretty good and it’s a multi-narrator audio so that she should be fun.
One great book I’d definitely recommend is STITCHES, by David Small, coming out in September. It’s a graphic novel memoir about a kid growing up in Detroit in a dysfunctional family. It’s really dark, but really moving.
And one I just read that’s a lot more cheery is MY LIFE IN FRANCE by Julia Child. Really funny and swet memoir that made even me (a terrible cook) want to make some French dishes 🙂
Zafon is a great writer!
I got The Magicians waiting to be read!
TSS: The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane/The Lost Book Of Salem by Katherine Howe
The Magicians sounds really good. While looking at that book on Goodreads, I noticed that Lev Goodman also wrote Codex. Have you read that? That book sounds good too.
Happy reading!
Thanks, Cindy. I’ll check those out. I’m not a big cook, either but that sounds fun.
Gautami, I can’t wait to finally read Zafon. He’s next on my list and I’m so excited! I’ll be interested to see what everyone thinks of the magicians.
Nan, The Magicians is good!I was turned off a little bit because the promotional reviews and blurbs made it out to be very fast paced and exciting and it was more, rolling and pretty. Still good, just different. I haven’t read The Codex but I’ll have to look into it.
