Sunday Salon: Reading Rehashed with a Side of Magic

July 12, 2009

The Sunday Salon.com
This was a week of revisited reading. I reviewed two books I’d already read: Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You and Santiago’s Children. They are both short albeit fantastic books about completely different things. They somehow worked themselves into being reread in the same week, one for a friend, the other for Picador’s Book Club.

Here are my books from this week, leaning against my very optimistic TBR pile for the near future.

I also have an announcement. Pardon me, for a minute, while I run to the top of the closest mountain and yell:

I am getting a copy of The Magicians!

My dear friend, Toni, is sending a copy of Lev Grossman‘s book which will not be released in the states until August. If you haven’t checked the book out, you must do so, right now.

That appears to be all of the available reading information on the home front. Feel free to chime in and tell me what you’ve read this week, what you will read next week or what book you’re anxiously awaiting.

You are so lucky! We were just talking about The Magician on twitter today. Happy reading.

This week I’m reading Graceling, The Family Man by Elinor Lipman, and The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe.

Oh, I’ll have to go back and find the conversation. I’m so psyched about it.
Nicole, that’s awesome! I can’t promise that it will actually be good but the concept is fantastic and it’s been reviewed by a few of my favorite current writers (Junot Diaz, etc) so I’m hopeful! I’m excited to see everyone’s reviews.

I am totally green with envy. I saw Lev Grossman read from The Magicians at Readercon this weekend but for some dumb reason nobody was selling it! D’oh!

The Magician sounds so intriguing! I will definitely be adding it to my list – I’m looking forward to hearing what you think about it.

    Mari,
No no I’M jealous! That’s awesome! Th first I heard of it was from friends who went to LeakyCon (Harry Potter conference) this spring. They all received the first chapter. I was hooked!

    Belle,
I hope it doesn’t disappoint. From what I’ve read, it should be fantastic, though!
